A filling is a way to restore a decayed tooth back to its normal shape and function. If you have a tooth that requires a filling, we will first remove the decayed tooth material, then clean the affected area and fill the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material. This filling will help prevent further decay by closing off any cracks or spaces where bacteria might enter. There are various types of dental fillings. The most popular include composite fillings, amalgam fillings and ceramic fillings. Composite resin fillings are tooth-colored fillings that create a more natural appearance. They can be used on either front or back teeth and provide good durability and resistance to fracture. These white fillings are less noticeable than amalgam (silver) fillings. Composite resin fillings usually last between 3 and 10 years. They may not be ideal for larger fillings as they may chip or wear over time. When coming in for a filling, our dentist will conduct a thorough examination, including x-rays if necessary, to determine the extent of the decay and the most suitable type of filling. The decayed portion of the tooth will be gently removed, and the area will be cleaned to prepare for the filling. The chosen filling material will be placed in layers and shaped to restore the tooth's natural form and function. Once the material is in place, the filling will be hardened using a special light and polished to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
